The joy of leadership comes from seeing others achieve more than they thought they were capable of. Simon Sinek

This quote on leadership by Simon Sinek, made me think of the joy I feel when my clients, make changes and get to achieve and live more than they expected they would. It also reminds me of my role as a woman, leader, manager and agent of change.

Around 45 years ago, in one of my classes at college, the lecturer asked us what do we wanted to become as professionals. Out of my heart, not knowing a thing about what management meant, I answered that I wanted to become a manager in a big company. I remember that one of my classmates said that he wanted to work in that company I’ll be managing.

I became a Chemical Engineer and forgot the incident. Many years later I met again that fellow classmate and he reminded me of the story. At that time I was already a manager in a big corporation. By then I already knew that a good manager is whom is able to bring out the best of people; however, I didn’t connect the dots until later, when I could see that throughout my career I had been doing that, even many years before I formally became a manager.

I was being already a leader and manager when I was the industrial tutor of that student who got honours on his thesis, when I mentored recently graduated professionals working in my consulting company or the companies I was a consultant to, even when I was facilitating environmental awareness training and always found ways to take the awareness to a more individual level.

I had the blessing of igniting in these young professionals and in many of those who attended training sessions with me a desire for being the best they could be at any moment. Some of these professionals are still in touch with me after decades. Some have told me that I made a difference in their life; and for me, there is nothing more rewarding than that.

During many years I wanted to study Management and Executive Coaching, which I couldn’t do due to personal circumstances at that time; however, I can see now how I was already intuitively being a manager, mentor and coach.

Today, as I devote my time and energy to empower and support others to create a life that’s rewarding, purposeful and fulfilling according to their own definition of reward, purpose and fulfilment, I can’t but feel joy and satisfaction when I see my clients achieving much more than what they thought they could.

When you regain control of your life and begin to lead it, you and your life change. You feel empowered, are confident of who you are and what you can achieve, you become a leader for those that surround you, what encourages them to bring out the best of themselves.
